Gothic novels
Supernatural
Gothic novels emphasize horror, mystery and the supernatural. Three elements help embrace the characteristics of Gothic literature, atmosphere, action, and supernatural. Of those three elements I think the supernatural is the most effective, for so many reasons, especially in a novel such as Frankenstein. Without the supernatural a Gothic novel would lose its sense of danger that is very important when the reason of the writing is to invoke fear. It would also lose the magical aspect that keeps the reader interested. A novel such as Frankenstein thrives because of the supernatural aspect it contains. Without the supernatural Frankenstein would not have the monster, and not be considered scary which would change the genre completely.

Frankenstein
The novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelly begins with four letters from an explorer Robert Walton to his sister. He is the captain of the ship headed to the North Pole. In the first letter, he tells his sister of the plans leading up to his leave and his goal to discover a northern passage to the Pacific to find the source of the Earth’s magnetism. Walton has a of friends, and feels lonely and isolated, because he is much smarter than his crew. Walton finds a stranger is weak, and starving. The stranger spends days recovering, nursed by the crew, before he can speak. Walton and the stranger become friends, and the stranger eventually tells Walton his story. At the end of the fourth letter, Walton states that the stranger will start to narrarate the story after the fourth letter ends. If I had to write a ghost story I would not start it off with letters. To me to use letters is feeble, and I would start it off as a story on the news someone is watching or newspaper article to make it seem like my story will be interesting enough to be told worldwide.
Spring Break
One thing I hope to do over my Spring Break is to catch up on my sleep! School takes up a lot of my free time with studying, reading, and homework. Most of the time if i want to finish my tasks and maintain a good GPA I have to stay up pretty late finishing everything that I have to do. Also I am an amazing procrastinator, so most of the time I put off my work up until it is absolutely necessary for me to do it. I understand that I should not procrastinate, for it is a very bad habit, however I cannot seem to break it. A very big candidate to my procrastination are my extracurriculars, and the distance from my home to my school. Some things that take up my time from school is the fact that I swim, and take piano lessons. Swimming is about a hour and a half long each weekday, and since I have piano lessons I have to practice a half hour, and sometimes more each day. Lorain County Community College is about 20 or so minutes from my home, and I drive there and back each school day. Since I am so busy, and sleep so late all I want to do this spring break is sleep.
Responsibility
One time I was given a responsibility was when i had to plan some games for my brother's 9th birthday party. I was lazy and put it off til about a day and a half before his actual party, and I did not even have the stuff needed to play the games i had planned out! My mom was very irritated with me when i told her we had to go to target and get supplies, especially because she had come back from getting my brother's cake. My brother's party was sports themed. Although he wanted it to be Steelers themed i highly doubted some of the guests would have appreciated that. All i needed was some sports balls water balloons, Easter eggs, and a mini football. I had a water balloon toss/fight, an egg hunt, and a throw the football at the target game planned. My mom knew these games would be fun for the kids, so she took me, and I got my supplies. She was very irritated, but when the party came around the kids enjoyed playing those games.

Promises
One time I promised my mother that I would clean my room by the end of the week. Throughout the week my bedroom actually got messier. My mom would yell at me each day. Sheasked me why I had not cleaned it yet, and that the end of the week was coming closer and closer, but I kept procrastinating. Once the end of the week came my bedroom was still messy, and I knew I was going to get in a lot of trouble. My mom gave me til the end of the day, however I kept telling myself that nothing would happen, and just like every other time I was wrong. She came into my room and looked at the mess and yelled at me for what seemed like hours. It probably was hours. I got grounded til I cleaned my room, but the yelling itself seemed like the punishment.

Desperate Measures
One person who went through desperate measures to get what she wanted was my mother. My mom was supposed to pick up my brother Sidd, and his friend Gabe last year after school. She was already running late, and to make things worse her car was making loud frighting noises, the gas started to leak, and eventually it broke down. My mom did not know what to do, however she did know she could not call AAA, for they would take too long. She could not call my dad, because he was working in Lakewood, which is about a twenty to thirty drive from where we live and she only had about ten minutes to find a car. She tried calling my Aunt Sandy, but she was at work. She also considered calling the school and telling them that Sidd and Gabe would have to take the bus, but she knew they had already departed. Our neighbors, Hannah and Chris, saw my mom struggling so they offered a hand to help start the car back up. Once they finally gave up and knew they could not do anything they let my mom borrow their SUV. Although my mom was a few minutes late due to the unfortunate circumstances she picked up my brother and his friend safely.
